International Women’s Day, My Story by Naomi Buff

International Women’s Day is today, March 8th and has been a day of celebration for Women’s achievements from social to political.  It is recognised globally and has been celebrated for over 100 years and whilst it is not organised by one particular group or organisation it collectively brings together various Women’s corporations, organisations, governments and charities.

To be honest I don’t really consider myself successful as I have so many goals which seem to be so far away and it is easy to get wrapped up in the daily grind that I often don’t stop to reflect upon achievements.  It isn’t until someone congratulates me and tells me how well I am doing that I think I must be doing something right!

It is much easier for me to give compliments than receive them, so I was truly honoured when I was asked to share my story of the woman behind my brand with Beyond Bespoke, Brands of Britishness (read the article here)

I have always had high expectations, big dreams and bigger ambitions.

I have always been ambitious to achieve success, when Ella (now 14) was a baby I would have endless talks with friends (over coffee and cake) about crazy and wild ideas for business ventures that would make me millions (still waiting for that but always hopeful and believing!)  It wasn’t until my early 30’s when a change of circumstances (and country) led me to nutrition and health which quickly became a burning passion, it wasn’t long before business ventures started inspiring me with opportunities aligning and everything flowing naturally.  Things were happening effortlessly however it was extremely hard work with a huge amount of pressure but that didn’t bothered me as I knew I was on the right path and was finding it fun, rewarding and fulfilling.  I have often doubted myself and still do to this day however am constantly reminded that I am on the right path when I get feedback and testimonials from clients and customers who tell me how much I have helped them or how their life has improved because of me, this reminds me of why I am doing it and motivates me to continue – always.

SUCCESS

  1. the accomplishment of an aim or purpose

    – The dictionary!

I often wonder what point defines success, my goal in my 20’s was to be successful, but 14 years on from coffee and cake I now see that as vague and loose goal which doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t have the substance behind it and the mini goals within it.  I am currently working on breaking this down into mini achievable goals so that I can say with confidence that I am accomplishing my purpose.

Running my own business has pushed me to my limits countless times and continues to challenge me.  I have had to question everything numerous times and pick myself up from failures with a smile and keep going.  Quitting is not an option. I believe in myself.

I can’t tell you how many times I have cried over big decisions which I have made on my own, how much sleep has been lost over silly mistakes I have made and money lost.  I constantly feel out of my depth and live outside of my comfort zone on a daily basis and on the verge of giving up more times than I can count.  I have had lots of great ideas and business ventures over the years that have been started with passion, enthusiasm and motivation only for them to fail.  It has been brutally hard at times but wildly rewarding at others.  In a relatively short time I have achieved some amazing highs of my career including being the first person to introduce superfoods and alternative healthier options to Monaco in various restaurants and hotels and working with Chef Philippe Joannès of The Fairmont Monte Carlo to create a “light and lean” breakfast menu which was rolled out across the gorgeous Horizon restaurant.

This journey has taught me so much about myself and others and I am truly grateful for the experiences I have had.  I am constantly questioning myself and doubting myself which continues to push me to grow and learn more about myself and my work.

Life is a journey not a destination

I am currently doing a lot more Nutritional Coaching which I love and have just started my second Online Woman’s Wellness accountability program as well as running my nutritional cookery workshops from home.  I am working on a various Corporate Wellness programs and would love to start getting some e-books together to collate my best recipes and tips for staying healthy and balanced.  I have had a very stressful 6 months with my 3rd run of my I AM Blends and despite hours and hours of blood, sweat and tears I have had countless problems and issues which have made me question whether I should continue beyond this batch (shame as I just adjusted the flavouring so they finally taste amazing!).  But I believe the right things flow easily and whilst life does throw us challenges there comes a point where you have to question what the healthy cut off point is before getting thrown under the bus!!  Would this be a failure?  Hell no, I have single handily brought a product to market which is a huge achievement in itself.

I am writing this today to give you the behind the scenes picture of running a business and raising a family as it is a rollercoaster of ups and downs and many of the ups are visible from pretty images in little boxes which hundreds of hashtags.  It is not plain sailing and certainly isn’t boring but it is hugely rewarding on so many levels.  As a Mother of a daughter I want her to grow up believing that she can achieve anything that she sets out too.  I tell my daughter constantly that she can achieve anything she wants if she is prepared to put in the time and effort, I believe that if you want results in life, you have to show up and work for it!  I read somewhere that you can master anything in 10,000 hours – imagine the possibilities…..

I have been extremely lucky to be blessed with so many amazing, inspiring and supportive friends who have believed in me, helped me through tough times and celebrated good times.  Women lift each other up, we motivate, celebrate and inspire each other which makes us stronger together.  It is an exciting time to be a woman, so wherever you are today, spend a few moments being grateful and acknowledging your unique gifts and talents you bring to the world.

If you are thinking of starting your own business but scared that you might fall, consider the possibility that you might also fly.  Believe in yourself and anything becomes possible.

I hope you have enjoyed this blog,

Love

Naomi x
